Divergent Book and Movie Fansite
The first section of out Insurgent read-along consists of chapters 1 through 7, and I am so excited to discuss it now! (I'm going to attempt to do this entire read-along devoid of the movie so that we can all respect the movie and the book as separate creations!)
We last left Tris and her companions in Divergent on a train heading away from the city with Tobias, Peter, Caleb, and Marcus on board. Tris falls asleep and then...
I wake with his name in my mouth.
Before I open my eyes, I watch him crumple to the pavement again. Dead.
The opening line embodies the theme of guilt that so often comes up in this novel, racking Tris with pain and grief.
But at this point, she doesn't have much time to dwell on what she has done because the train they are on is about to reach Amity headquarters and they have to jump off.
The five of them reach Amity Headquarters and walk in the front door, as Tris remarks,
They then meet Amity leader Johanna, who is relieved to see them, especially Marcus, and tells them that some of the Abnegation arrived there earlier. They also are instructed to hand over their weapons, but Tris keeps hers:
Tobias hands over his gun, but when I reach behind me to take out my own concealed weapon, he grabs my hand, guiding it away from my back. Then he laces his fingers with mine to cover up what he just did.
I know it's smart to keep one of our guns. But it would have been a relief to hand it over. (6)
Then they are all settled down for the night to finally get some rest.
Tris wakes up the next morning and puts her gun under her mattress, suffering from the memories of holding the gun to shoot Will. She also hides the hard drive behind the dresser in her room.
Then Tobias comes in to tell Tris about the Amity meeting coming up and then says...
This is such a great scene in the book!
Then as the two of them discuss their situation, Tris has a memory of Tobias' suffering as a child:
Suddenly I remember him clutching the curtains in his living room, about nine years old, wearing gray, his dark eyes shut. The image is fleeting, and it could be my imagination, not a memory. (12)
Tris showers, changes, then her Abnegation neighbor Susan comes in and braids her hair, as Tris is not very mobile due to her gunshot wound. But as Tris looks at herself in the mirror, she thinks of her mom cutting her hair in their home. Then Tris asks herself:
How can I look the same, when she's gone and everything is different? I can't.
Then she proceeds with Tobias and Caleb to Amity's meeting, where, after much discussion, they rule that their faction will be a safe house for all factions under the following conditions:
Tris and Tobias both agree: "We won't be able to stay here long."
After Tris returns to her room, she sees Marcus and Johanna walking together in the apple orchard and decides to follow them.
While she eavesdrops on their conversation, Tris learns that Jeanine attacked Abnegation for information and not government power. Marcus knows this information and states that many Abnegation sacrificed their lives for it but will not tell Johanna what it is.
Conflicted, Tris goes to Tobias' room to tell him what she heard. But Caleb is there with him watching Tobias throw knives at cheese.
Caleb leaves, but Tris gets a little distracted from her main reason for coming to Tobias' room...
Tris eventually tells Tobias what she heard Marcus say to Johanna and thinks that they need to pursue this information.
Tobias, however, accuses Marcus of lying about it in an attempt to feel more important than he actually is. He believes the two of them should just go back to the city, try to figure out what's going on, and try to take down Erudite, then worry about this information.
Tris agrees with him but does not change her mind that they need to figure out that information first.
This scene emphasizes the theme of trust that is all throughout this novel. Tris and Tobias constantly struggle to fully trust one another and this is only the beginning of that struggle.
The next day, Tris joins Caleb at breakfast:
I bite my apple.
"You aren't going to eat your toast?" He says.
"The bread tastes strange," I say. "You can have it if you want."
Anyways, over their conversation, Caleb asks Tris what factions she had an aptitude for. And although she is hesitant to tell him, she reveals that it was Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite.
Caleb is fascinated by this anomaly and is pondering it when a group of Abnegation join their table soon followed by Tobias, who is frustrated with the Amity meddling.
Then Marcus comes in behind Tris and lays a hand on her shoulder, disturbing both her and Tobias. When they ask what he wants, he states that he and the other Abnegation plan to leave soon to return to the city and want Tris and Tobias as Dauntless escorts. They agree to leave two days later.
However, Marcus' conversation with Johanna still troubles Tris, and she wants to find out the truth about this information.
After breakfast, Tris pursues Marcus and attempts to get this information out of him. He tells her that her father risked his life for this info but still won't reveal it to her. She offers to help him get the info back but he just laughs at her. Tris tries to dig back at him by telling him how much Tobias hates him and walks away from Marcus feeling victorious until she remembers that Marcus won: she didn't get the information.
That night, Tris wakes up from a nightmare about Will in Abnegation clothing being pecked at by crows. She sobs as she feels "the monster of grief again" and decides to go to Tobias' room, forgetting that she only has a long t-shirt on.
Tobias asks her what happened in her bad dream, but she doesn't have the heart to tell him about what she did to Will. She is afraid he will never look at her the same again. (again, a lack of trust)
Then Tobias says this, which jump-starts a passionate scene of affection:
This a great scene and I would recommend re-reading it if you haven't already. I can't do it justice by summarizing. :)
Tris eventually comes back to reality and cries while Tobias comforts her.
In the moments before I drift off to sleep, I hear him whisper, "I love you, Tris."
And maybe I would say it back, but I am too far gone. (51)
The next morning, Tris awakes and hugs Tobias then goes to her room to find Peter standing next to her bed. They have a snappy exchange as Tris tries to stand in between him and the hard drive that she knows he is looking for.
But then she notices a bulge in his pocket, and they begin to fight. Some Amity break them up, and Tobias gets the hard drive back, scolding both Peter and Tris for fighting in this safe house.
Then they take Tris to the "Conflict Room" where she gets a nice dosage of peace serum, erasing all the anger she had, as well as all her common sense! Dizzily, she goes out to the orchards, looking for Tobias.
All Tris wants to do in this hilarious scene is kiss Tobias, but he is determined to figure out what's wrong with her. She also claims to have figured out why he likes her, even though she's not very nice:
After some more conversation, Tobias can't handle Tris' shenanigans anymore...
Tobias takes her to see Johanna who says that Tris probably got an overdose of the peace serum due to her small size. Johanna also remarks that if they want to stay away from the serum, to avoid the bread...
This is another scene I would recommend re-reading! It is so funny, it gets me laughing every time!
Five hours later, the serum finally wears off and Tris finds herself in her room as she was shut in there by Tobias.
Tobias comes in, relieved that Tris is back. Tris wonders why she couldn't fight that serum like she can fight the others and Tobias states that maybe she didn't want to fight it off.
"You might be right," I say quietly.
"Are you conceding?" he says, his mouth falling open with mock surprise. "Seems like that serum did you some good after all...."
I shove him as hard as I can. "Take that back. Take it back now."
"Okay, Okay!" He puts up his hands. "It's just... I'm not very nice either, you know. That's why I like you so-"
"Out!" I shout, pointing at the door.
Laughing to himself, Tobias kisses my cheek and leaves the room. (68-69)
That evening, Tris spends some time climbing trees in the orchard when she hears a buzzing in the distance that sounds like cars.
When she see the cars, she knows they are from Erudite and goes to warn the others. They all change out of their Abnegation and Dauntless clothing so that they blend in with the Amity, and Tris grabs her gun and destroys the hard drive.
A meeting is called in the dining hall and Johanna states that the Abnegation and Dauntless that were there have moved on but that the Erudite can search the building.
A Dauntless woman notices that Tobias does not look like the others, and when she peeks down his collar at his tattoos, Tobias reacts. He grabs the lady and her gun and begins to shoot. Tris cannot react because of her fear of holding a gun and the guilt associated with it. Tobias then says that whoever is with them should start to run.
As they go out, Tris sees another Erudite woman lift a small gun towards the man in front of her, so selflessly she dives to save the man, only afterwards to see it was Peter she saved.
Then they all make a break for it through the Amity fields, splitting up into groups in hopes of not being followed.
