Divergent Book and Movie Fansite
Thanks for joining me in this read-along again this week! Thank you for all your great discussions and suggestions from last week and I hope we have a good time with it this week too with Chapters 8 through 13!
(If you missed Chapters 1-7 check them out here.)
After fleeing Amity, Tris, Tobias, Caleb, and Susan all end up in a group together. They decide that they must get into the city to avoid the Erudite finding them in the country. So, they hop on a train as it comes by.
However, this train is full of armed factionless members. With none other than Edward, an "initiate who left Dauntless after Peter attacked him with a butter knife," as their leader (90).
Edward questions why they should help them escape the Erudite. Tris mentions that she helped him when no one else would, but that doesn't cover the others to him.
But then Tobias reveals his real identity:
Edward then agrees to let them pass as long as they come with him when they arrive in the city:
"We know someone who's been looking for you, Tobias Eaton."
As they make their way to the filthy factionless sector, Tris is constantly wondering who Tobias knows from the factionless but can't come up with any answers.
Finally they arrive and see the factionless all hanging out together, nothing like what Tris thought they would be.
We are in a factionless storehouse, and the factionless, who are supposed to be scattered, isolated, and without community... are together inside it. Are together, like a faction.
Then, Edward takes the group into a room where they meet Evelyn, Tobias' supposedly-dead Abnegation mother.
Tris is shocked by this. Caleb, however, is focused on maps in the room that appear to be population counts, but Evelyn dismisses.
As they walk to dinner, Evelyn and Tobias have an argument about why Tobias is here and why he hates her so much:
"You really don't get it," he says. "You don't have the vaguest conception of what you've done to me." He sounds breathless. "I don't want to join up with your little band of factionless. I want to get out of here as quickly as possible."
"My little band of factionless is twice the size of Dauntless," says Evelyn. "You would do well to take it seriously. Its actions may determine the future of this city."
A little scary, right?
Later, Tobias tells Tris that Evelyn left because she had an affair and he hates her because she didn't take him with her when she left. She left him with his worst nightmare, Marcus.
(Because chapters 9-13 got lost somewhere in the internet, I'm having to rewrite them really fast, so I apologize for them not being as thorough as last week! I will do better next week! :)
Tris and the others then participate in a factionless dinner. During that, Tris learns that the Dauntless have split up into those loyal to the Erudite and those who aren't (who are at Candor). She also learns that there was an inciting incident that caused Peter to stab Edward in the eye during Dauntless initiation.
They all go to sleep, but Tris wakes in the middle of the night to hear Tobias talking in hushed tone with his mother about several topics that include:
Tris doesn't trust Evelyn but doesn't want to tell Tobias because then he will know she was eavesdropping.
The next morning, Tris and Susan shower and change clothes. Susan tells Tris that she is going to go join the refugee Abnegation in another factionless house.
Shortly after, Tris has a tense conversation with Evelyn. Evelyn reveals that Tris' father was originally Erudite and was good friends with Jeanine as a child. Tris then says:
"Listen carefully. I'm not stupid. I can see that you're trying to use him. And I'll tell him so, if he hasn't figured it out already."
Which in response Evelyn says:
Tris goes to join Caleb after this. He tells her that he is going to accompany Susan to the safehouse, and Tris tells him that she and Tobias are going to Candor Headquarters.
Tobias emerges from the bathroom and they both know it is time to go.
Tris and Tobias go to the "Merciless Mart" that is Candor headquarters. When they enter, Dauntless soldiers surround them and take their weapons. Tris and Tobias are confused as to why they are being arrested and one of the soldiers responds:
We were instructed to arrest you upon your arrival.
Tris and Tobias are put in a cell in the Merciless Mart. While they wait for more information, Tobias and Tris have another conversation about their trust:
"Sometimes," he says, "I worry that you don't trust me."
"I trust you," I say. "Of course I trust you. Why would you think otherwise?"
"Just seems like there's something you're not telling me. I told you things... I would never have told anyone else. Something's been going on with you, though, and you haven't told me yet."
"There's been a lot going on. You know that," I say. "And anyway, what about you? I could say the same thing to you."
..."If it's just your parents," he says softly, "tell me and I'll believe you." ...
"That's all it is," I say weakly. ... Guilt clutches at my stomach.
Again, Tris and Tobias are not trusting one another and Tris is racked with guilt because of it.
Suddenly, Jack Kang comes in and informs them that they are charged with crimes against humanity for helping run the simulation during the Abnegation attack. The two of them will be interrogated under the truth serum.
When it is time for their interrogation, Christina comes in to retrieve them. On the way to their questioning, Christina breaks the news that Will died in the attack. Tris tells her she already knew because she saw Will on the monitors. But Tobias knows Tris didn't and is suspicious.
Christina also tells them that Zeke is with the traitor Dauntless which was a surprise to everyone.
They arrive in the meeting room and Niles, the interrogator, injects Tobias with the truth serum.
Tobias is very snappy in his interrogation, insinuating that he had things he doesn't want to reveal. Tris has a hard time watching this too because of the deep secrets he is being forced to share. Tobias reveals the following things:
After revealing his one true regret, the Candor whisper,
I don't join in.
I am the only thing that kept him in the faction he wanted to leave. I am not worth that.
Maybe he deserves to know.
Then it's Tris' turn. She reveals some things but manages to hide some others:
Niles commends her for her Dauntless acts, but Tris can't except it without revealing the total truth. So when Niles asks her what her deepest regret is, she says:
"Will. ... I shot Will. ... He was going to kill me, but I killed him. My friend."
The Candor whisper "Thank you for your honesty..."
Christina confronts Tris, saying, "You killed him."
Uriah tries to comfort Tris.
And Tobias tells her that they can talk about it tomorrow.
That night, Tris returns to the interrogation room and throws one of the chairs out of the window and watches it break. Then she thinks of Al and how he was probably just tired of being Al and decided to end it.
She decides she is tired of being Tris. Too much guilt and grief and pain.
But she cannot give up her life with suicide because she has to honor her parents' deaths.
The next morning, Tris and Tobias have their confrontation where they argue about trusting one another and telling each other things. (I would recommend reading it if you haven't already)
Both are at fault here:
They argue and eventually break apart from each other in anger and frustration.
Here are some discussion questions I have found for this week's section:
Discuss in the comments!
For next week, please read Chapters 14 - 20 by Sunday January 18th!
